There are new leaders in the Youth Alliance League with Walsall taking advantage of Bury being without a game and going top after their 3-0 lead against Burnley last Saturday.

It’s all very close among the top half of the league. Walsall have a one point lead over Bury and Port Vale, who won at Rochdale, but Bury still have a game in hand. However, an eye must be kept on both Accrington and Blackpool. Neither have been beaten this season and they, along with Carlisle, are just a further two points behind. Those two unbeaten sides though have games in hand after starting the season late.

Carlisle might have gone top but are now down in sixth place having lost their unbeaten record. They were heavily beaten by Blackpool at home, this after taking an early lead too.

The top seven, which takes us to Rochdale in the last of those places, are pulling away. Only four points separate them but then there is a four point gap to Burnley in eighth place. We won six of our eight points in the first two games but had collected only two further points from two draws and three defeats since.

Preston, Wigan, Tranmere and Wrexham meanwhile are all still in search of a first win but what a result Morecambe had. Perennial strugglers, they kicked off last Saturday in next to bottom place, above opponents Wrexham only on goals scored. That’s certainly not the case now. Morecambe won the game 4-0 and have moved up four places to tenth, probably the highest position they’ve held since joining the league.

New leaders Walsall are likely to be there for no more than a week. They are without a game this week and could drop five places if all the results go against them. They went top with a win against us and we could play a part again. We face Bury this Saturday and a defeat would see the Shakers back on top of the league.

Last week’s results and this week’s fixtures are below, followed by Burnley’s 2016/17 goalscorers and the league table after the weekend games.
