A draw and a win in the last week have lifted Burnley to fourth in the Youth Alliance League, as high as we’ve been in the league since the 2011/12 season, a season when we finished second in the league with just one point less than champions Preston, and a season when strike pair Shay McCartan and Jason Gilchrist plundered 46 goals between them.

Those two results in the last few days saw us score six goals of which Nashe Chakwana and Tommy Wood, our two leading goalscorers this season, scored five with the other coming via an own goal.

It’s moved us even closer to the top of the league than we might have expected but top two Blackpool and Walsall have both suffered defeats. Blackpool were surprisingly on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat against rivals Preston last Saturday and two days ago Walsall suffered a 4-2 loss at Rochdale.

Rochdale remain one point behind us with a game in hand and they and Walsall are now the only teams to have dropped less points than us. Although Blackpool remain four points clear at the top, they have slipped with the Preston defeat following a 2-0 loss at Wigan a week earlier. Their lead over Walsall is now just four points with the Saddlers at least winning one of their two games covered by this week’s review.

Third place Port Vale have moved closer with a 3-0 win against Carlisle, a result which has again seen the bottom two in the league switch places. Not for the first time in recent weeks the team at the bottom has moved up a place without playing. This time it is Wrexham going above Carlisle; their goal difference is currently just one better than that of the Cumbrians.

There are only four scheduled fixtures this week with an intriguing one between first and third as Blackpool host Port Vale.  A win for Vale would certainly tighten things up even more at the top. We travel to Morecambe for a game that has been rescheduled after a recent postponement.

The recent results and next fixtures are below with Burnley’s goalscorers this season and the table after the results shown.

The League Table will be updated as and when results come in and can be found with our Fixtures and Results within U23/U18 Stats on the top menu.
