When Burnley went behind in only three minutes this afternoon against Sheffield Wednesday in the Professional Development League, I suspect most thought we were going to suffer a defeat with Wednesday going on to win the north group and move into the play-offs with a home game against Charlton.

After a difficult start, we came into the game and were level on 16 minutes when trialist striker Rob Harker headed home a Jordan Cropper cross and it could have been even better soon after when Tinashe Chakwana netted only to see his effort ruled out for offside.

Burnley were playing well now and Chakwana got his reward when he gave us the lead just ten minutes before the break. Again it was from a Cropper ball that was headed by Harker, but this time the Bury youngster headed it into the path of Chakwana who scored from close range.

Wednesday had to go for it in the second half, knowing that Nottingham Forest had beaten Huddersfield and that they would definitely need a point. They forced Conor Mitchell into one outstanding save and then hit the woodwork, but it was the Clarets who, in the end, came closest to another goal when goalkeeper Wallis brought down Chakwana in the fifth minute of stoppage time. He redeemed himself by saving Chakwana’s penalty.

A win then, a seventh in twelve games for Michael Duff’s team and that ensured we would not finish the season bottom of the league.

The teams were;
