Arfield gets international call on a special day for an ex-Claret
Over the next few days I think we all hope that a good number of Burnley players will be receiving a call from their respective countries for the forthcoming internationals and Scott Arfield is the first of them with a call up to the Canada squad, following on from those received for the Republic of Ireland by Kevin Long and Jeff Hendrick last week.
Arfield made a debut for his adopted country in March of last year, coming on as a substitute in a defeat against Mexico and has now established himself within the squad and has won a total of 12 caps.
He’s been out injured recently but is expected to be fit to join up with the squad over the weekend for a week’s training in Murcia, Spain with new coach John Herdman where they will play a friendly against New Zealand, who could include Chris Wood in their line up, on Saturday 24th March.
There are just two other English based players in the squad in Blackburn goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler and Liverpool midfielder Liam Miller but there is a familiar name to Burnley fans named alongside Arfield.
David Edgar has received his first call up since November 2016 having recovered from the career threatening injury sustained in a road accident whilst on holiday in America.
He was playing for Vancouver Whitecaps at the time and made his comeback for them just last month. He’s still listed as a member of their squad but hasn’t signed and the Canada squad shows him as unattached to any club.
Now 30, he had been a regular in the Canada team during the time he played for Burnley and then Birmingham, and had captained his country on a number of occasions. Edgar himself declared this call up as extra special.
