Atkinson in charge at the Riverside
Burnley’s game at Middlesbrough tomorrow will be refereed by Martin Atkinson from Leeds, his third Burnley game this season having previously been in charge of our home game against Bournemouth and our recent visit to Hull.
Atkinson is very much one of our top referees now and doesn’t often officiate outside of the Premier League and it was as far back as October 2013 when he last had a Football League game.
His first three Burnley matches were in the Football League starting with the night the floodlights went out at Crewe. It will be two years next week since he last refereed us in the Football League. Since, it’s been Premier League games along with an FA Cup tie and one play-off game against Reading when he sent off Andre Bikey.
He’s one of three players he’s sent off in Burnley games. Two seasons ago he red carded Nemanja Matic in our 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge and in that last Burnley game at Hull he showed a second yellow card to Ashley Barnes right at the end.
Barnes is only the second player he’s dismissed this season; back in October he wrongly sent off West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell for two yellow cards in the space of a couple of minutes and both were poor decisions.
As for the yellow cards, there have been 88 in 27 domestic games. Of those, 42 have gone to home team players and 46 to away team players.
Martin Atkinson is currently 5th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 74.89 out of 100. He is undoubtedly one of our better referees.
The assistant referees are Stephen Child (Kent) and Dave Bryan (Lincolnshire). The fourth official is Paul Tierney (Lancashire) whose last Burnley game was the 1-0 January home win against Southampton.
