Atkinson is first home referee of the season
Burnley’s home game against West Bromwich Albion tomorrow will be refereed by Martin Atkinson from Leeds, his first Turf Moor game since last December when he was in charge of our 3-2 win against Bournemouth.
He subsequently refereed us on two more occasions away from home in the draws at Hull and Middlesbrough, the Hull game being the third time he’d refereed that fixture in the Premier League.
Atkinson is one of the longest serving referees on the select group having been promoted in 2005 along with Andre Marriner. That promotion came only three years after he’d reached the Conference as a referee and only Mike Dean has been on the select group longer. He’s also been a Fifa listed referee since 2006.
It was in the 2004/05 season that he refereed us for the first time in a 1-1 Championship draw at Crewe on the night the lights went out and tomorrow will be his 17th Burnley game and it is fair to say there is very little criticism we can point in his direction.
Tomorrow will be his second game of the season; he took charge of last week’s fixture between Manchester United and West Ham. There were four yellow cards in that game, two to either side.
Last season he refereed 35 games in English football in which he handed out 111 yellow and three red cards. There were four yellow cards in the Chelsea v Spurs semi-final and of the others, 48 went to home team players and 59 to away team players.
The three players he sent off were West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell at Crystal Palace, Ashley Barnes in our game at Hull and Marouane Fellaini in the Manchester derby at the Etihad.
Martin Atkinson is currently fourth in RATE THE REF with a rating of 75.59 out of 100 and he is, in my view, as good a referee as we now have in the Premier League.
The assistant referees are Peter Kirkup (Northamptonshire) and Stephen Child (Kent). The fourth official is Chris Kavanagh (Manchester) the most recently appointed Select Group referee who refereed the recent Turf Moor friendly against Hannover 96.
