Tomorrow’s game at Brighton will be refereed by Stuart Attwell for whom it will be a second Burnley game this season having taken charge of the home defeat against Liverpool in early December. It will be the first time he’s refereed more than one Burnley game in a Premier League season since the away games at Manchester City and Aston Villa in 2009/10.

He’s generally been OK when he’s refereed us although he did miss a clear penalty last season when West Ham goalkeeper Joe Hart wiped out Chris Wood in front of the Burnley fans at the cricket field end. This season, he had a decent game when Liverpool beat us, standing up to their protests when we went ahead against them.

He’s refereed 21 games this season of which 13 have been in the Premier League. He’s reached a total of 68 yellow cards in those games with just two red cards. Those yellow cards have been split between home and away players with 34 each. He sent off Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero on the night they went out of the League Cup on penalties. His most recent card was the dismissal of Everton’s Lucas Digne in their 1-0 win at Huddersfield.

Most recently he refereed the Newport v Middlesbrough FA Cup replay. Newport won it to set up a tie against Manchester City while Attwell kept his cards in his pocket.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Constantine Hatzidakis and Simon Long. The fourth official is David Coote whose most recent game was the 2-0 win against West Ham at the end of December.
