Blackpool hammered home some late goals last week against bottom of the table Wrexham to make them clear favourites to lift the title this Saturday when the Youth Alliance League season concludes.

They went into their last game of the season ahead of us on goal difference with both having a game remaining and for some time last Saturday morning it looked as though we could edge ahead of them and reach the summit for the first time.

Having fallen 1-0 behind at Shrewsbury, we came back to lead 3-1 and then 4-2 and with Blackpool being held by Wrexham, and having survived a penalty, our hopes were increased of winning this league for the first time in what is likely to be our last season.

But it didn’t work out. Shrewsbury pulled one back and then equalised in the 92nd and last minute of the game while Blackpool went on a late rampage, including three goals in the last nine minutes, to beat Wrexham 4-0.

It’s quite simple now. Our only chance of winning the league is to beat Accrington this Saturday and then hope Morecambe can beat Blackpool.

The two teams just below us, Rochdale and Walsall both won, Rochdale winning at Wigan and Walsall at Accrington. Both are now just two points behind us although Rochdale’s season is over. They will be looking for a Burnley defeat to try and move into runners up spot.

Port Vale won their last game to ensure a fifth place finish while in the one other game played last Saturday, Fleetwood moved up a place with a 3-1 win against Bury.

There are just five games remaining this season. Carlisle will travel to Tranmere on Friday with the four other games all to be played on Saturday morning.
