Burnley had to settle for a point this morning in the Youth Alliance League against Wigan Athletic who twice came back, the first time from two goals behind and then to equalise in the 90th minute.

It looked as though we might be looking at a big win when Nashé Chakwana scored twice in just over a minute early in the game to give us a 2-0 lead.

The first came in the 8th minute after a corner on the right, taken by Tyler Shrimpton. It was met by Oliver Younger whose header came back off the bar for Chakwana to hammer home from close range.

Just over a minute later the lead was doubled when Tommy Wood played a good ball through to set Chakwana clear to the right of goal. He got to the edge of the box and made no mistake.

If we thought that things were going to be easy, we found that wasn’t the case and Wigan grew into the game and for long periods during the first half were the better side. They looked likely to reduce the arrears on more than one occasion but some good defending with some heroic blocks kept the lead.

Nothing changed at the start of the second half other than Wigan’s goals did come. They pulled one back just three minutes in and then equalised on 57 minutes. At that point it looked as though we could be heading for defeat but from the restart we were back in front. A long ball was played forward for Chakwana but the defender got there first and looped the ball into his own goal.

It was a fairly even game after that but we had our chances to extend the lead which we didn’t take. Wigan, with the help of some generous free kicks, also had their moments but we almost clinched it just minutes from the end with what would have been a brilliant goal from right back James Clarke who went on a run from his own half only to see his shot saved.

Even so, it looked as though the points were going our way until Wigan equalised with just ten seconds of normal time to play and in the end we had to settle for a point.

The Burnley team was: Connor King, James Clarke, Oliver Younger, Scott Wilson, Ali Koiki (Trialist ht), Tristan Jumeau, Kian Yari, Tyler Shrimpton, Dwight McNeil, Tommy Wood (Trialist ht), Nashé Chakwana. Subs not used: Marcel Wusiewicz, Miles Fenton, RJ Pingling.
