Last Monday’s 6-0 win against Sheffield United at Curzon Ashton might not have moved us any further up the Professional Development League table but it means we are now the leading goalscorers in the north group of the league and behind only Ipswich who currently lead the south group.

1819 burnley mark howarth 00 500x500The four goals Tinashe Chakwana scored has taken him into joint second place in the league goalscorers, alongside four other players including team mate Dan Agyei with only Nottingham Forest’s Virgil Gomis now ahead of that group.

The week started with Leeds top of the north group, ahead of Sheffield United on goal difference with Leeds having conceded one less goal. That’s been blown out of the water now with us hitting the Blades for six while Leeds were 4-1 winners at Barnsley last Friday. Our win has enabled Bolton to move into second place with their win at Birmingham.

In what is again becoming a very tight league, we are fifth, just three points behind second place Bolton but also only six points clear of Barnsley who dropped to the bottom yesterday when Crewe moved up two places when they beat Nottingham Forest in the week’s final game.

It wasn’t a good week to be up at the top end of the south group. Leaders Ipswich were held by third from bottom Charlton while Millwall, in second place, couldn’t take advantage, also drawing their game at QPR. Third place Bristol City took a hammering against next to bottom Watford and Crystal Palace, fourth in the table, were beaten 1-0 at home by Coventry, the Sky Blues the only team to start in the top half who won their game. That table hasn’t changed much although QPR’s point has taken them to fourth.

This week’s fixtures kick off with two games on Friday with the final game next Tuesday. We are at Sheffield Wednesday and that will be played next Monday.

The player featured this week is Mark Howarth. The midfielder has recently returned from a long term injury and he scored our final goal in Monday’s win.
