Three summers ago, following our promotion to the Premier League, we were heavily linked with a move for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McArthur.

We’d gone up as runners-up behind Leicester who were also interested in taking him to the King Power. However, Crystal Palace got him in a £7 million transfer right on the window deadline allowing him to make his debut for them against us in a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park.

McArthur, has gone on to make 89 Premier League appearances for Palace, including 29 last season, but it is thought that the Scotland international might not be in the plans of new manager Frank de Boer according to the Daily Mail.

With Dean Marney to remain out injured for some time, with Joey Barton released at the end of last season, and Steven Defour’s Turf Moor future uncertain, Burnley will certainly be looking to strengthen the midfield area with the 29-year-old a potential candidate.

The Mail suggest that Aston Villa would like to sign him to boost their promotion hopes although it is thought they will need to get more players out before they can make a serious bid.

McArthur, who started his career with Hamilton, made over 150 league and cup appearances for Wigan in four seasons before moving to Palace.
