This season we entered the Central League’s Northern Cup and were placed in Group A with Bradford City, Fleetwood and Morecambe.

Having drawn 3-3 at home against Fleetwood, we went on to beat Bradford City away 4-1 and then add a 1-0 win against Morecambe to complete our fixtures with seven points.

The last of those games was played on 12th November and we’ve been top of the group since but waiting for the final game to be played between Bradford City and Fleetwood to learn whether we have succeeded in getting into the semi-finals as group winners.

Only Fleetwood can catch us; they are three points behind and still to play Bradford City. Their goal difference is much better than ours and so they will go through, rather than us, should they win their last group game. A draw or a Bradford City win will see us go through.

The game should have been played in December but twice fell victim to the weather, and the same has happened today with Fleetwood reporting that heavy rain in West Yorkshire had forced another postponement.

The game will now be played at Fleetwood’s Poolfoot Farm training ground on Wednesday 3rd February with a 1 p.m. kick off, after which we will know whether we have progressed or not.

There are still games to be played in two of the other three groups. Either Middlesbrough or Hartlepool will win through from Group B, Stoke have already qualified from Group C And in Group D it will be Notts County unless they lose by more than three goals in their last game against bottom team Rotherham.

Meanwhile, our under-21 (development) team played a behind closed doors friendly yesterday beating Rochdale 1-0 at Gawthorpe with a Chris Long strike from 35-yards. The game saw Paul Robinson, our latest acquisition, play the first half in goal in a team which also featured George Green who signed for us at the end of last week.

The Burnley team was: Paul Robinson (Danijel Nizic ht), Brad Jackson, Arlen Birch, Tom Anderson, Christian Hill (Nathan Lowe 25, Jamal Crawford 74), Jamie Frost, Aiden O’Neill, Brandon Wilson, Renny Smith (Daniel Agyei ht), George Green (Renny Smith 68), Chris Long.
