man-city2-1000x500Just as the draw was starting this evening, I said they’d manage to give us a tough away game, probably against one of the Manchester clubs, and so it proved with us drawn to face the team currently best in the country and at their own home.

Number 24 v Number 10 means Manchester City v Burnley and a return to the Etihad just a few week since we were beaten there 3-0 in the Premier League; a return to the Etihad against a team currently still unbeaten this season.

It is 27 years since we last played them in the FA Cup and this will be only the fourth meeting between the two clubs in the competition with the previous three all having been played at Turf Moor.

The first of them, in a 3rd round tie in the 1930/31 season, ended in a 3-0 win for Burnley with our goals scored by Andy McCluggage from the penalty spot, Thomas Prest and Evan Jenkins, but the other two both ended in the 1-0 defeats, in 1932/33 (6th round) and much more recently in 1990/91 when Colin Hendry scored the only goal against a then fourth division Burnley.

That 1991 game was played on 6th January in the 3rd round after we’d beaten Stafford Rangers and Stoke in the earlier rounds and our team that day was: Chris Pearce, Ian Measham, Ray Deakin, John Deary, John Pender, Steve Davis, Winston White (David Hamilton), Ron Futcher, John Francis, Joe Jakub, Neil Grewcock (Andy Farrell).

It was played on 6th January and that is the date of this tie should it not be moved for television.
