Clarets go fourth as top clash ends in stalemate
While the top two in the league, Blackpool and Walsall, fought out a 0-0 draw, Burnley moved into fourth place in the Youth Alliance League, going ahead of Accrington Stanley, Bury and Shrewsbury Town after our 4-0 win against Carlisle United.
Blackpool went top last week with that big 9-0 win at Bury but knew a defeat to Walsall would see the Saddlers go back above them. The draw kept Blackpool’s two point lead with both teams having played the same number of games.
Fast improving Port Vale are now within a point of Walsall having beaten Bury, leaders for so long but now down in sixth place. That defeat for Bury ensured we went above them. Shrewsbury lost, surprisingly, 4-0 at Wigan while Accrington, the third team we passed, saw two games postponed last week.
Accrington, with two games in hand, and Bury are just a point behind us while Shrewsbury are one point further behind having played three more games. Rochdale come next and they, like Accrington, have two games in hand.
At the other end of the table, Wrexham saw their game called off and they remain five points away from the next clubs with Tranmere, Fleetwood and Carlisle all on 13 points. Fleetwood moved up a place courtesy of their draw against Preston and the extent of Carlisle’s defeat against us.
We travel to face Bury this week at their training base at Carrington and we go with an unbeaten run of seven games which includes five wins and two draws. Our only defeats this season came when, through injuries, we had to field very inexperienced teams in successive games against Accrington, Rochdale and Walsall.
