Aston Villa’s former Crewe Alexandra midfielder Ashley Westwood was one of the first players to be linked with the Clarets following the end of the 2015/16 season and the word in the West Midlands today suggests he’s still very much a target.

The Birmingham Mail have revealed that a source close to Turf Moor has said that we could be ready to test Villa’s resolve to keep Westwood with a £6 million bid.

The player still has four years remaining on his Villa contract and is due to fly out with the squad for pre-season in Austria, but the lure of Premier League football could be key for the Clarets. The Mail reports that Westwood’s hard work ethic and low maintenance ways make him a suitable candidate to slot into our group.

It was considered that midfield was an area that we would be looking to strengthen and that was before Joey Barton moved to Rangers and Westwood looks now to be one of the players we have very much targeted.
