heaton nabiCharlton might have been clear favourites to beat us this afternoon in the Professional Development League but our team of young players, trialists and an England international goalkeeper provided us with just our fifth win of the season.

We won the game 1-0 with a goal from a Rahis Nabi (pictured above with Heaton) corner 17 minutes from the end. The goal has been credited to the Burnley midfielder although his corner took a deflection off a defender on the way in.

Burnley, who included three of the trialists who featured in the 2-1 defeat last Thursday against Hull, dominated for much of the game and were fully deserving of the win.

It also provided Tom Heaton with his first competitive action since suffering his injury last September. He’s previously played in two behind closed doors friendly games. Only today Heaton has spoken about retaining hopes of making the World Cup this summer and to come back and keep a clean sheet will have been a major boost for him.

The teams were;

Charlton: Ashley Maynard-Brewer, Kenneth Yao (Kareem Isiaka 82), Jo Cummings, Ryan Blumberg, Jordan Zemura, Matt Carter, George Lapslie, (Alex Willis ht), Albie Morgan, Louis-Michel Yamfam, Terrique Anderson (Alfie Doughty 25), Joshua Umerah. Sub not used: Jordan Beeney.

Burnley: Tom Heaton, James Clarke, Oliver Younger, Scott Wilson, Ali Koiki, Tinashe Chakwana, Josh Benson, Rahis Nabi, Stephen Duke-McKenna (Tunde Bayode), Moise Kroma (Ntumba Massanka 58), Dwight McNeil. Subs not used: Aidan Stone, Jordan Cropper, Brad Jackson.
