Cork’s night against the Geordies
Midfielder Jack Cork was voted Burnley’s best player in Monday’s 1-0 home win against Newcastle United, winning both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.
On a night when the Clarets moved up to seventh in the Premier League, Cork was again in outstanding form in the midfield and won 54% of the man of the match vote.
Behind him in second place was central defender James Tarkowski who just edged ahead of Cork’s midfield partner Steven Defour; both had a 10% share of the vote. Goalkeeper Nick Pope, who kept his third Premier League clean sheet to add to the one when he came on as a substitute, took fourth place with 8% of the vote.
The top four in the player ratings showed just one change. Again Cork was the winner with a rating of 8.56 out of 10 and again Tarkowski took second place; his rating was 8.09. Ben Mee was third with 8.00 and Pope was again fourth; he scored a rating of 7.91 out of 10.
Cork won ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. There were six points for Tarkowski and two each for Defour, Mee and Pope. Those five players held the top five places in the table before this game so have just extended their leads at the top.
Tarkowski is currently second, just three points behind Cork, while Defour is a further 13 points behind. Cork and Defour were joint winners of the August Player of the Month with Tarkowski winning it for September, and it’s Tarkowski again who has beaten Cork by one point in the four matches during October.
The next vote will start tomorrow for the Southampton game, and will be available within an hour of the final whistle.
