Cotterill, who was at Burnley from the summer of 2004 until November 2007, has signed a contract until the end of the 2019/20 season at St. Andrew’s and signals a return to football since he was sacked as Bristol City manager in January 2016.

Having managed Cheltenham and Stoke prior to landing the Burnley job, he went on to manage Notts County, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest prior to taking the job at Bristol City.

Lee Carsley, who has been in caretaker charge, will become his assistant with Paul Groves, with whom he worked at Portsmouth, and Kevin Hitchcock also continuing in their roles as first team and goalkeeper coach.

Cotterill had previously worked at Birmingham at the end of last season, coming in as number two to Harry Redknapp for the last three games during which they won twice to avoid relegation. He declined the opportunity to continue this season but now returns as Redknapp’s replacement.
