Burnley have sensationally beaten Newcastle in our first Premier League Cup game of the season, coming from 2-0 down with under a quarter of an hour to go to win the game 4-3.

1718 burnley rahis nabi 00 500x500Michael Duff had warned of a tough game so I don’t think it was a big surprise when we fell behind to a Lewis McNall goal on 20 minutes in what was the only goal of the first half. It certainly wasn’t one way traffic though and we twice came very close to equalising, one with a header and then a shot from distance, both of which just went wide.

Nashé Chakwana hit the bar early in the second half and we had another opportunity to draw level, but just past the hour it was 2-0 with McNall getting his second of the game with a header although by now we were the better team and this was against the run of play.

Duff made a couple of changes and it paid dividends when Harry Limb, on for Jamie Thomas, pulled one back within five minutes, but that could not have been a clue to what would happen in the last ten minutes of this game.

With 80 minutes on the clock we drew level when Christian N’Guessan scored from close range and incredibly went in front three minutes later with a looping header from Khius Metz.

We were in front for only two minutes before Newcastle equalised through Mo Sangare following a corner but we went almost straight back down and scored again with a goal from Rahis Nabi (pictured), this time the winner, with the Clarets firmly the better side.

We hung on without any scares through the rest of the game which included four minutes of extra time to give us three points in our first group game.

The teams were;

Newcastle: Paul Woolston, Jamie Sterry (Callum Smith ht), Craig Spooner, Stefan O’Connor, Josef Yarney, Owen Bailey, Ben El-Mhanni, Daniel Barlaser (Mackenzie Heaney 69), Lewis McNall, Mo Sangare, Victor Fernandez (Owen Gallacher 72). Subs not used: Nathan Harker, Tannick Aziakonou,

Burnley: Aidan Stone, Arlen Birch, Harry Flowers, Oliver Younger, Ali Koiki, Nashé Chakwana (Olatunde Bayode 69), Rahis Nabi, Christian N’Guessan, Dwight McNeil, Jamie Thomas (Harry Limb 69), Khius Metz (Mark Howarth 88). Subs not used: Connor King, James Clarke.
