Johann Berg Gudmundsson won’t play at Sunderland

Sean Dyche has confirmed today that Johann Berg Gudmundsson will miss a fourth successive league game having again been ruled out with the knee injury sustained in the FA Cup tie against Lincoln four weeks ago.

However, there could be better news on Steven Defour. He’s been out since the last day of January when he suffered a hamstring injury against Leicester but he returned to action this week with 70 minutes in the behind closed doors friendly against FC Edmonton at Gawthorpe. Defour’s chances of playing at Sunderland, according to the manager, are touch and go.

Dyche said on Defour: “We’ll have to make a judgement call, 70 minutes obviously isn’t a full game but he came through clear, which is good news. We made a call on getting him off, he’s been out a reasonable amount of time, and it was precautionary,” but of Gudmundsson added: “Johann’s is still niggling on. We thought that would have settled down. It’s a medial ligament strain and just hasn’t settled down as quickly as you would expect, so we’ll get a secondary view from the specialist. We’ll take him for another check, more as a precaution.”
