Steven Defour won both the man of the match vote and the player ratings following our recent home draw against Hull and went and did it again as we beat Watford 2-0 in front of the Sky cameras on Monday.

This was undoubtedly our best performance of the season, albeit we didn’t have to defend as we’d done when beating Liverpool by the same score. It was a convincing win and the catalyst for it was the performance of the midfield with four of the five picking up points in the vote and the ratings.

Defour secured virtually half of the man of the match vote with the midfield and striker Sam Vokes collecting the bulk of the rest. George Boyd, playing as well as he has done in two years at Burnley, came second with 12% and Vokes, for his outstanding display as a lone striker, captured 10%. The two other central midfielders, Dean Marney and Jeff Hendrick, couldn’t be separated and shared fourth place with 9% of the vote.

Seven of the eleven recorded ratings of more than eight on a night when goalkeeper Tom Heaton, due mainly to his lack of activity, coming last with a rating of 7.34 out of 10. Again it was Defour in first place with 8.85 with Michael Keane taking second place; his rating was 8.33. Vokes was again in third place with a rating of 8.31 and Boyd was in fourth place with a rating of 8.28 out of 10.

Defour, therefore, picked up the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Both Boyd and Vokes secured four points, there were three points for Keane and one each for Hendrick and Marney.

Keane was the player of the month for August and it’s Defour who has taken that honour for September with 20 points from the three games. He is some way ahead of Hendrick and Mee who were second with 11 points each.

Defour has also moved into joint second place with Mee in the Up the Clarets Player of the Year table. Both have a total of 20 points but that is six points behind leader Keane.

The Watford result is below with the player of the month and player of the year tables and the next man of the match vote and player ratings will be under way on Sunday within an hour of the final whistle against Arsenal and will run until the end of Wednesday.
