Last season, the first ever Up the Clarets Goal of the Season winner was Jeff Hendrick with his goal against Bournemouth, but this year his goal at Everton has been beaten into second place behind Steven Defour’s brilliant free kick against Manchester United on Boxing Day.

As good as Hendrick’s goal was in 2016/17, I voted for Defour’s goal in the FA Cup win against Bristol City which took second place; this year I voted for Hendrick and again I’ve selected the goal that finished second although it was very, very close in the end.

The top two goals were so different but there was no doubting the quality of either of them. Defour’s winner was very much a one man effort, but to take a free from around 30-yards out and beat a goalkeeper of the quality of David de Gea, in my view the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, was special as he got the ball up and over the wall and into the top corner to the goalkeeper’s right.

It was certainly also our best goal of the season in terms of the response to it from the Burnley fans. At the time I wrote: “The away end just went berserk,” and I think that summed it up perfectly.

The goal won 38% of the vote, and that was just ahead of the 35% (12 vote) that Hendrick won for that wonderful team goal at Goodison Park in October. Nick Pope and Ben Mee were the only two players to miss out on the entire 24-pass move which ended when Hendrick sidestepped Morgan Schneiderlin before coolly finishing past the stunned Everton defenders Michael Keane and Ashley Williams.

It was proof that this Burnley team can very definitely play with the ball and the highlight of the move was Robbie Brady’s cross field pass from right to left for Stephen Ward.

With those two goals winning 73% of the vote, the rest were also rans and that includes those superb Ashley Barnes goals in successive away games at West Ham and West Brom, his sensational finish at West Brom coming third with just a 9% share of the vote.
