1415 burnley jason shackell 00 300x500Derby County yesterday confirmed that defenders Jason Shackell and Chris Baird were both being released at the end of their contracts, two players who played parts in our promotion to the Premier League in 2014.

Shackell (pictured) played more than a part. He was with Burnley for three years as captain and was an ever present as he led us to promotion during which, for a second season, he scored for the Clarets at Ewood Park.

He did, admittedly, leave under a cloud in the summer of 2015 following relegation with a tweet coming from the club at the time that it would leave a happier dressing room, but he’d played 128 league games for us in three seasons including that one season in the Premier League.

Baird’s stay though was a short one. With no club having left Reading in the January, he arrived to stand in for Kieran Trippier as promotion got closer. He started five games in Trippier’s absence and then made a couple of substitute appearances as promotion was confirmed.

Baird moved on to West Brom initially and then Derby and he’s been involved this season whereas Shackell hasn’t. You have to go back to January 2017 for his last league appearance for the club. He spent the second half of the 2017/18 season at Millwall for whom he made seven substitute appearances.

With Baird now 36 and Shackell 34, they have been released along with Darren Bent. There could be more to go at Derby too. After failing yet again to win promotion, the Derby press have been reporting this week that there could be some significant cost cutting ahead of the new season.
