The development squad have today been beaten by Wigan Athletic 3-1 in a behind closed doors friendly at Gawthorpe.

1516 burnley turf moor 04It was a very young Burnley line up which included two players currently out on loan, Tony Aghayere and Jamie Thomas, as well as a trialist starting the game and two more coming on as substitutes.

It was a first game for the side since beating Bournemouth in the Premier League Cup a couple of weeks ago but it was a much changed side. However, it was Burnley who started on the front foot and got the opening goal when one of the two trialists capitalised on a mistake from a Wigan defender to place his shot past the visiting keeper.

Sam Stubbs, the defender at fault, quickly responded by scoring himself at the other end, heading home from a corner and just before half time they went in front through a Josh Gregory goal.

Burnley had a couple of opportunities to draw level in the second half but the final goal went Wigan’s way when Sam Cosgrove scored with a quarter of an hour to go.
