All three of Burnley’s teams – that’s the first team, development squad and youth team – will be in action this week as we build towards the start of the new football season and it is the dev squad who will kick off first with a game tonight at Holt House against Colne.

The 2015/16 season was a big one for Colne who are celebrating their 20th year this year. Like Burnley they won their league, lifting the North West Counties Premier Division title to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One North.

They did so with a few former Burnley players in their side, the likes of Chris Anderson and Ben Hoskin, who were in our 2008/09 youth team, and Alex Coleman, who captained us in the 2012 FA Youth Cup semi-final. They could all play tonight as could goalkeeper Ben Woodhead who has recently signed for the club.

It’s difficult to determine what the Burnley team will be although I doubt it will be littered with trialists in the way the team was last year, particularly in the game at Sheffield when I think eight trialists took part.

We’ve made three signings this summer. Robbie Leitch and Jimmy Dunne could feature although Jamie Thomas has now moved to Ayr United on loan until January and will be looking to get some football in the Scottish Championship.

I doubt Thomas will be the only player to go out on a loan. Already George Green has played for Bradford City while just over a week ago both Alex Whitmore and Dan Agyei got game time for Morecambe. I’m sure that was with the intention of trying to get these players out on loan.

The development squad are now coached by Michael Jolley, who has recently secured his pro-licence, and Andy Farrell who had previously worked alongside Terry Pashley with the youth team.

Games against Colne have been a rare event and the only one I can recall was played in July 2004 on what proved to be a bitterly cold day. We won that day 2-1 with goals from Alex Taylor and Cayne Hanley against a Colne team that featured Andy Payton.

Kick off at Colne tonight 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, tomorrow morning at Gawthorpe, the youth team will face a tough game against Bury who ended last season in second place in the Youth Alliance League. It will be a second game for the them following the 0-0 draw against Rotherham last week.
