For the second successive season, Dwight McNeil had a major impact as the Clarets returned to form with a home win against West Ham. Last season he played ever so well in only his second Premier League start and scored his first goal at first team level while four days ago he turned in arguably his best performance yet.

1920 burnley dwight mcneil 00 500x500It really was a return to form after the previous week’s defeat at Sheffield United and Dwight tormented them down our left hand side and he played a major role in both first half goals as well as the one in between with the superb cross that Chris Wood headed home.

He won both the man of the match vote and the player ratings. He picked up a massive 61% of the vote for the man of the match and was followed by Chris Wood, who returned to the side with a goal; he picked up a 12% share. Central defender Ben Mee was third with 7% while 6% of the vote won fourth place for Jeff Hendrick.

I think it is fair to say that the player ratings were higher than a week earlier. At Sheffield United, the highest rating went to Charlie Taylor who scored 6.09 out of 10. The lowest rating of the lot this time was 7.73.

McNeil scored exactly nine out of ten, equalling the best of the season so far; James Tarkowski got the same rating for his performance at Wolves. Wood and Mee were again second and third with ratings of 8.65 and 8.40 respectively. This time fourth place went to Jack Cork who scored 8.22 out of 10.

McNeil has won the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with six points for Wood, four for Mee and both Cork and Hendrick winning one point each. Mee’s points have allowed him to close the gap on leader Tarkowski to 14, but McNeil and Wood have now moved into third and fourth places.

With the international break meaning no games this weekend, our next voting will start a week next Saturday after our game at Watford. The West Ham result and the current player of the year table are below.
