The Football League have this morning confirmed the nominations for both the manager and player of the month awards for January and they include both Sean Dyche and Ben Mee.

Dyche is up against Steve Bruce (Hull), Gary Rowett (Birmingham) and the surprise choice of Nottingham Forest’s Dougie Freedman.

Bruce was always going to be in the nominated group. Hull have picked up the maximum 12 points from their four games in January. Birmingham have 11 points but have played one game more and then all of Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff have 10 points, although as is the case with Birmingham, Cardiff have played one more game.

The surprise, therefore, is the inclusion of Freedman rather than Carlos Carvalhal. Forest have just nine points in the month and have played five games, winning just two games in the month, albeit one of them was against league leaders Middlesbrough.

As for the player nominations; Mee will be up against Makiel Kieftenbeld (Birmingham), Hull’s Abel Hernandez and Gary Hooper (Sheffield Wednesday).

It’s always difficult to determine which way these will go but Hernandez did score six goals during the month, including a hat trick against Charlton, and Hooper scored five times. Birmingham midfielder Kieftenbeld scored twice.

Mee was in the Burnley team that kept two clean sheets and conceded just twice in four games that brought those ten points.
