michael duff 300x400Our under-23 team are off to Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon for what is our last game of the 2017/18 season.

For our opponents Sheffield Wednesday, the situation is that they go into the game one point behind north group leaders Bolton who have already finished. One point will see them move ahead of them to win the north group which would earn them a play-off semi-final at home against Charlton. Defeat would see them looking over their shoulders at Nottingham Forest who would then, with a win against Huddersfield, take their second place.

Wednesday will be looking to equal last season’s achievement, the first season of the Professional Development League. They won the north group and went on to beat Millwall and Hull in the play-offs to become overall champions.

Meanwhile, having got off the bottom of the league a week and a half ago, and then moved four points clear of Barnsley last Friday in beating them at Oakwell, we now have a nail biter where a defeat is likely to see us finish bottom.

Monday saw Barnsley secure a big win at Coventry and move back within one point and today they are away against Bristol City who, over the season, have been the weakest of all the teams in the league. With Barnsley likely to get something, and with them having a far better goal difference than us, we have to match their result to stay above them.

Our game was yesterday moved to Hillsborough having previously been scheduled to go ahead at their training ground. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
