Paul Tierney will officially close our 2017/18 season, it will be his whistle that brings an end to our final game of the season against Bournemouth tomorrow in what will be his fourth Burnley game of the season although the first at Turf Moor.

He’s previously refereed our away games at Leicester, Huddersfield and Watford. The Watford game was his eighth Burnley game in total and probably his best, although that is no commendation given some of the poor games he’s had previously with Burnley fans likely to point, in particular, to that penalty he didn’t give us at Huddersfield.

Tierney’s performances have not endeared him to the Burnley crowd and he is currently bottom of the RATE THE REF table and the only referee who falls below 50 out of 100 with a rating, prior to the Watford game of 47.72.

You shouldn’t expect too many cards from him. In 31 games this season he’s handed out 81 yellow cards, 37 of them to home team players and44 to away team players. That’s one of the lower averages of cards per game among the select group referees. He’s also one of only two in that group, the other being Neil Swarbrick, who hasn’t sent off a single player; Tierney’s last red card was shown to Watford’s Miguel Britos in April 2017.

Let’s hope he has a quiet game tomorrow and one with none of the poor decisions that have blighted so many of his Burnley games.

The assistant referees are Adrian Holmes (West Yorkshire) and Derek Easton (Gloucestershire). The fourth official is Roger East (Wiltshire) who refereed our last home game against Brighton.
