Our under-18s will kick off their first away game of the season this morning in the U18 Professional Development League with a visit to Colchester United.

1718 burnley kian yari 00 500x500A few months ago we ended our inaugural season in the league in 5th place in the north group and seven days ago kicked off the new season with a 1-0 win against Charlton at Gawthorpe with Michael Fowler scoring the goal. Today’s opponents Colchester, meanwhile, suffered a big 5-0 defeat at the hands of Cardiff City.

It will be the first time we’ve travelled to Colchester in this league. Teams from the opposite groups (north and south) meet just once per season and almost a year ago we played them at home and recorded a 4-2 win which came in the middle of a seven game unbeaten run in the league.

We’d lost our opening game against Watford but then won five and drew two of the next seven games to take us to the top of the league and the Colchester win was the fourth of those games.

It looked as though it was going to be a comfortable win when goals from Tristan Jumeau, Dwight McNeil and Jordan Cropper took us into a 3-0 lead within the first twenty minutes. Still 3-0 at half time, things took a turn against us in the second half with Colchester pulling two goals back and for a time it looked as though, as in the previous game at Ipswich, we might surrender the lead altogether.

But there was a sting in the tail both on the pitch and from above. The Colchester goalkeeper had been the man of the match but five minutes into stoppage time he raced out to clear. Kian Yari (pictured) collected the ball and all he had to do was hit the target of an unguarded net, albeit from over 50 yards.

He got it absolutely right and as he celebrated with his team mates the heavens opened and after 90 minutes of playing in the sun, we all left absolutely drenched.

Back to today, kick off is at 11 a.m. with the game being played at Colchester’s training ground.

And Burnley line up: Harry Allen, Dan Moss, Udoka Chimna, Richard Taylor, Matty Rain, Mitchell George, Kian Yari, Ethan Kershaw, Kai Smith, Terry Mupariwa, Michael Fowler. Subs: Joe O’Shaughnessy, Edon Pruti, Joe Conley, Rhys Fenlon, Lewis Richardson.
