Kevin Friend will referee tomorrow’s game against West Ham United and it will be his first time in the middle at Turf Moor since the 1-0 win against Stoke City in the 2016/17 season when a George Boyd goal, his final Burnley goal, gave us a 1-0 win.

It was Friend’s third and final Burnley game that season but he didn’t referee any of our 2017/18 games although he did referee us twice on the road last season at Arsenal, when he had a poor game, and at Chelsea.

He’s definitely had some disappointing games refereeing us and that’s reflected in his RATE THE REF standing. He’s currently in 14th place with a rating of 61.84 out of 100 and that’s from a total of 19 games.

He’s been busy this season with his cards. He’s refereed nine games so far, seven in the Premier League and one each in the Championship and League Cup,. He’s reached a total of 33 yellow and three red cards in those games. Of those yellows, 17 have gone to home team players and 16 to away team players. All three players dismissed have come in the Premier League. The first was Brighton’s Florin Andone in a 2-0 home defeat against Southampton in August and a week later he sent off Aston Villa’s Trézquet as they went down 1-0 at Crystal Palace. More recently card number three went the way of Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff in a 1-1 home draw against Wolves.

His most recent game was last Saturday, that between Brighton and Norwich at the Amex Stadium in which only Norwich midfielder Marco Stiepermann was yellow carded.

For the second successive Burnley game, Staffordshire referee Steve Martin will be fourth official and Lee Mason, referee in our recent draw at Aston Villa, will be on VAR duty.
