from orientSix days ago we launched a competition to win a copy of the recently published Burnley book From Orient to the Emirates which has been written by Tim Quelch.

There were four multi-choice questions to answer with the winner to be chosen at random after the closing date which was 8 p.m. on Monday, just as we were kicking off against Newcastle.

The winner has now been chosen at random from the many all correct entries received and here are the answers to the four questions asked.

Who was the first Black British player to be selected for Burnley’s first team?

Answer: Les Lawrence

Who did Mitchell Thomas describe as ‘The life and soul of every party. He could talk underwater.’?

Tim wrote: The main jokers in this resilient pack were said to be mesmerising winger Glen Little and elegant yet combative midfielder Paul Cook. Mitchell Thomas described Little as ‘the life and soul of the party’. Thomas was convinced that the ultra-chatty Little ‘could talk under water’.

Answer: Glen Little

Which Burnley manager or caretaker manager attempted to encourage his players to have greater self belief by urging them to ‘fake it to make it’?

Tim wrote: Clarke Carlisle recalled: ‘Stevie Caldwell said to me that when he moved to Wigan, the players there couldn’t believe some of the stuff Owen had said to us. It was simply the power of positive thinking. It’s a confidence thing. You fake it to make it.’

Tim wrote: Afterwards Stan shared a drink with his longstanding friend, the Blackburn manager Graeme Souness together with the Ewood coaching staff. Everyone was on their best behaviour. No one mentioned the game. Stan quipped later: ‘It was a bit like rowing away from the Titanic without mentioning the iceberg’.
