The record breaking goal at Villa Park

The record breaking goal at Villa Park

Arguably our greatest ever goalscorer, Willie Irvine is 76 today and will be thankfully celebrating his birthday at home with his wife Rita and the Irvine family.

It’s not a significant birthday in terms of numbers but it is for Willie who just a few weeks ago was taken to hospital in Preston after a fall at home left him with some very serious head injuries. I know from speaking to members of his family that they had serious concerns and eventually he had to undergo surgery to his brain to relieve the pressure from it.

The Irvine family have had the best news of all with Willie able to come home to continue his recovery and he’s now able to get out and hopefully will be fit enough to get back next season to watching the likes of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood do what he used to do so regularly, putting the ball in the net.

From me personally, and from Up the Clarets and I’m sure every Claret everywhere, a really happy birthday Willie and our best wishes as you continue to recover.
