The first time Tony Harrington, from Hartlepool, refereed Burnley was when we kicked off our League Cup run of 2013/14 with a 4-0 win at York and tonight he takes charge of our game in the same competition against Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground.

He did well enough that night but had something of a nightmare in his first Turf Moor game later that season when he took charge of our 2-0 win against Doncaster, and since, his only Burnley game was last season’s 2-1 home defeat against Reading.

He’s just embarked on his fifth season as a Football League referee; his first season kicking off with a League Two 0-0 draw between Rochdale and Northampton at Spotland in August 2012. He didn’t get a Championship game until the following season when he was in charge of Bolton’s 1-1 home draw against Yeovil in September 2013.

Since, he has started to referee more often at Championship level, but even last season was more often seen in the lower two divisions with only just over a third of his games in the highest Football League division.

However, this season he’s refereed three Championship games and one League Cup tie, kicking off in East Lancashire with Norwich’s openign day 4-1 win at Ewood Park. He’s also refereed at Barnsley and Bristol City with the League Cup tie that between QPR and Swindon at Loftus Road.

In his previous seasons he’s averaged less than three cards per game but he’s got off to a busier start this season with a total of 20 yellow cards in those first four games, eleven of those going to home team players and nine to away team players.

His last game was Bristol City’s 1-0 home defeat against Newcastle last Saturday when he carded Luke Freeman, Lee Tomlin and Mark Little (all Bristol City).

Hopefully he’ll cut back on the yellow cards tonight and hopefully we won’t get a Doncaster type performance from him.

The assistant referees are Chris Akers (South Yorkshire) and Shaun Hudson (Tyne & Wear). The fourth official is Football League referee Seb Stockbridge (Tyne & Wear).
