A double save right at the end of the game from Tom Heaton ensured our 1-0 victory against Southampton last Saturday and helped him clinch both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.

Heaton had played well during the game but was tested firstly by former Claret Jay Rodriguez and then, from the rebound, Josh Sims. The double save not only made certain of the three points but also gave Tom his fifth clean sheet of the season.

He won the man of the match with a 30% share of the vote and that was ahead of second place Jeff Hendrick. The midfielder is currently in an outstanding run of form and claimed  25%. Central defender Ben Mee finished third with 17% of the vote while a 7% share meant a fourth place finish for Matt Lowton.

It was similar in the player ratings. Again Heaton and Hendrick took the first two places; Heaton had a rating of 8.27 out of 10 and Hendrick with 7.86. The two full backs were in third and fourth places, firstly Stephen Ward with 7.66 followed by Lowton whose rating was 7.63 out of 10.

The result means the maximum ten points for Heaton towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Hendrick won six points with all of Lowton, Mee and Ward winning two points each.

That result has extended Mee’s lead at the top to 12 points over his defensive partner Michael Keane while Heaton is now just a further eight points behind in third place. Hendrick has now moved into fourth place but is still some distance behind.

The Sunderland vote is now in progress and will continue until the end of Friday. Until then you can vote for your man of the match and post your player ratings.
