Heaton wins first place in team of last ten years
The last few days have seen votes cast to choose our best goalkeeper over the last ten years and it proved to be no contest with Tom Heaton always going to be the winner.
Tom was our first choice goalkeeper from the start of the 2013/14 season right through to the early days of 2017/18 when he was finally forced out of the team because of a serious shoulder injury. It would be almost a season and a half before we saw him again but he’s established himself as number one again since last Christmas.
His time in our team has seen us win two promotions to the Premier League and he was in goal when we retained our place in the top league for the first time in 2016/17 before missing all but the first three and a bit games of the momentous season when we finished seventh to reach the Europa League qualifiers.
I suspected he would be the likely winner of this vote but I wasn’t so sure it was going to be quite as convincing as it was. He polled a staggering 87% of the vote with Nick Pope, who came in for him during 2017/18 and who himself then lost out last season with the same shoulder injury, claiming 11% to finish second.
Brian Jensen was third; he received 2% of the vote but Joe Hart won only one vote while there wasn’t a single vote for Lee Grant who was in goal for the bulk of the three seasons from 2010/11 to 2012/13 before he opted to return to Derby.
So the first place in the team goes to Heaton and later today the vote will be underway to select the first of the two full backs.
