It’s FA Cup day tomorrow as the Clarets face Barnsley at home with our tie one of nine selected to use Video Assistant Referees (VAR), the first time this technology has been in use at Turf Moor.

Simon Hooper will referee the game at Turf Moor while in contact at Stockley Park with our first ever VAR referee Lee Mason, and for those of you there tomorrow with a view of the new screen, a big message will be displayed should there be a VAR review.

As for Hooper, this is his first Burnley game since our 1-1 draw at Newcastle in January last year. It was only his second Premier League game and his first since a nightmare introduction on the opening day of the 2015/16 season.

He was promoted to the select group last summer but has only refereed four Premier League games this season with 12 other games in the Football League and one in the League Cup. There have been 57 yellow and three red cards in those games. Of those yellows, 28 have gone to home team players and 29 to away team players. He sent off Blackburn’s Derrick Williams in their League Cup exit at Bournemouth and his next red card was to Nottingham Forest’s Tobias Figueiredo in their sensational 5-5 draw at Aston Villa. His most recent red card was to Muhamed Besic of Middlesbrough in their 1-1 home draw against Blackburn.

He’s not a referee who has caused us too many problems and that’s reflected in his RATE THE REF rating of 69.54 out of 100 which sees him in seventh place. I’m not sure how often he’s refereed a game using VAR previously but the hope will be that everything goes well and that his rating goes higher.

The assistant referees are Simon Beck and Richard West. The fourth official is Graham Salisbury, whose last Burnley game was the 1-0 win at Bolton in February 2014, and the AVAR is Dan Cook.
