Again he rung the changes during the second half and admitted afterwards: “The side is still not chosen for the season and I think it will be closer this year. Usually I have a fair shot at what I think the team will be, but this season there’s a few places still up for grabs and as a group they have laid down some good markers this pre-season. The team that plays on Saturday might not be the team that plays at Chelsea. It’s fair to say a number will be, but others I’m not so sure about.”

Speaking about the game, he said: “It was a good work-out and I was really pleased because we choose these clubs according to some of the challenges we face. I think it’s fair to say they were an extreme case of total football, but there are certain teams in the Premier League who try to play that way, by constantly passing.

“Sometimes they just seem to pass it and pass it, but that’s brilliant for our lads because you have to stay focused and keep your shape, and we did that. Equally, when we got it, particularly in the first half we kept the ball well and scored as great goal. Once you start dismantling the team it’s never easy and they changed their whole team, so I expected it not to be as fluid, but for the first 60 minutes I was extremely pleased.”
