Burnley are in FA Cup action tomorrow at Manchester City and it will come as no surprise to learn that the referee is Graham Scott who will be refereeing a third Burnley FA Cup tie out of four.

Scott was the referee when we went out of the competition to Lincoln two seasons ago and he didn’t referee us again until he took charge of our next FA Cup game which was at the Etihad in last season’s third round game against tomorrow’s opponents Manchester City.

There were concerning decisions in both games that went against us but that’s no surprise for one of the poorer referees in the Premier League. He has refereed us twice this season. He did well enough at Southampton on the opening day of the season but was somewhat erratic at Wembley for the recent defeat against Spurs.

Since refereeing us in that game, he has taken charge of a further six games taking his total for the season to 16 in which there have been 41 yellow and two red cards. Of those yellows, 21 have gone to home team players and 20 to away team players. His one red card in the Premier League this season was that of Watford’s Étienne Capoue in their 2-0 defeat at Leicester on 1st December.

His last game was Southampton’s 2-1 win against Everton last Saturday. Southampton had both Nathan Redmond and Shane Long yellow carded along with Everton’s Idrissa Gueye.

I’m just hoping he has a better game than he did on the previous two occasions he has refereed us in the FA Cup when he’ll also have to contend with VAR. He was the referee who turned it into pure farce in last season’s FA Cup replay between Chelsea and Norwich at Stamford Bridge.

The assistant referees are Adrian Holmes and Mick McDonough. The fourth official is Tony Harrington whose last Burnley game was the best forgotten League Cup defeat at Accrington. At Stockley Park tomorrow, the VAR referee is Andre Marriner, who refereed us at Wolves earlier this season, assisted by Scott Ledger.
