Joey’s Rangers departure confirmed
Rangers have this afternoon, in a short statement, confirmed that Joey Barton’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect.
The statement reads: “Rangers and Joey Barton have agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Neither Rangers nor Joey Barton will comment further.”
Joey signed a two year contract with the Scottish Premiership club last summer, making his debut for them in a Scottish League Cup victory against Annan in July. He made five league appearances for them of which two were won, two drawn and one lost, that being his last game which ended in a 5-1 defeat at Celtic on 10th September. That was almost nine weeks ago. He was suspended early the following week, a suspension that was lifted only last week to allow him to train with the academy.
Rangers made it clear then he would not be considered for first team football and two days ago it became known that his contract would be terminated. He’s now a free agent and will certainly see a queue of clubs for his services in January. There has been a lot of speculation of a return to Burnley but certainly nothing has been said by the club or the play in that respect other than Barton recently suggesting that any such consideration would be for another day.Share this page :
