Mike Jones has been a regular referee in Burnley games. It will be his third Burnley game this year; he previously refereed the home games against Blackburn and Middlesbrough, and in total this will be his 33rd Burnley game which started with a home win against Brentford in 1998.

In a long career in the middle he’s certainly had his fair share of controversy both in Burnley games and elsewhere. Probably the most controversial was the beach ball incident at Sunderland in 2009. He was suspended for that and his return game was at the Turf when a series of poor decisions led to us beating Hull 2-0 in our first ever Premier League season.

He’s sent off a number of players in our games, including Michael Duff and Ashley Barnes, but probably his best one was the dismissal of now Hartlepool manager Craig Hignett then playing for Coventry, forcing the player to walk two thirds of the length of the Longside receiving abuse.

We have to go back to an old Division Three game between Mansfield and Hull for his first ever game. Mansfield won it 2-0 but had Iyseden Christie sent off. His first Premier League game nine years later also featured a Hull defeat. On that occasion Wigan won 5-0 at the KC Stadium. Soon after came his first Premier League red card for Blackburn’s Benni McCarthy.

This season he’s refereed four games. He started with one in the Championship and one in League Two and has since refereed two Premier League games. His card total in those games is sixteen yellow and two red. He dismissed Reading’s Joey van den Berg in their 2-2 home draw against Brighton and Mark Hughes of Accrington as they lost 3-2 at home against Morecambe. It might come as a surprise, apart from the two players sent off being home team players, that his yellow card count is even with eight home players and eight away players.

His last game, Southampton’s 1-0 home win against Swansea, saw Shane Long (Southampton) and Kyle Naughton (Swansea) yellow carded.

Mike Jones is currently just inside the top half of RATE THE REF with a rating of 65.78 out of 10. What we might get from him tonight is anyone’s guess but it would help to keep the beach balls off the pitch.

The assistant referees are Mark Scholes (Buckinghamshire) and Darren Cann (Norfolk). The fourth official is Kevin Friend (Leicestershire) whose last Burnley game was the 1-0 win at Preston in April.
