Mike Jones from Chester will referee our FA Cup 3rd round replay tonight against Sunderland and this will be his sixth Burnley game in under a year, all but one of them at home.

He refereed our home win against Blackburn and the 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough last season and this season was the referee when we beat both Watford and Everton at home before taking charge of our 4-0 defeat at West Brom.

Tonight will be his 36th Burnley game. Five of his previous games have been in cup competitions with three of them in the FA Cup. The first of those three was a 3rd round defeat at Derby in 2006 and he’s also refereed our 4th round replay win against West Brom at home in 2009 and our heavy 3rd round defeat at Norwich in 2011.

Craig Hignett was sacked as Hartlepool manager over the weekend. He, along with Jones, provided us with some fun back in 2002 when Jones sent off Hignett, then with Coventry, for a gesture made to the linesman. Former Blackburn player Hignett was forced to walk two thirds of the Longside, getting abuse all the way.

He’s had a fair collection of poor games against us but more recently he’s been fine and certainly all of those in the last year fall into that category. That’s taken him to 8th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 67.62 out of 100.

This season he’s refereed a total of 16 games in which he’s handed out 56 yellow cards and three red cards. Of those yellow cards, 26 have gone to home team players and 30 to away team players. His first two games of the season were in the Football League with a red card in each game; since he’s been used exclusively in the Premier League and cup competitions with the only red card going to Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk in their 2-1 home defeat against West Brom on New Year’s Eve.

Jones’ last game was Arsenal’s 4-0 win at Swansea three days ago. There were two yellow cards in the game to Swansea’s Ki Sung-Yueng and Leroy Fer.

The assistant referees are Peter Kirkup (Northamptonshire) and Simon Bennett (Staffordshire). The fourth official is Peter Bankes (Merseyside) whose last Burnley game was our 0-0 home draw against Ipswich last season.
