Jones returns to referee Everton game
Mike Jones is the referee for tomorrow’s home game against Everton in what will be his fourth Turf Moor game in 2016 having previously refereed our home games against Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough and, most recently, Watford.
He is without doubt the referee who gets the most Burnley games. Apart from refereeing those two Championship games last season, and he only refereed six Football League games all season, he had refereed two of our last four away games in the Premier League 2014/15 season and now comes back to the Turf less than four weeks since his last visit.
There was nothing too major in that Watford game although he was considered to be too lenient at times with their constant fouling and he was guilty of not showing a second yellow card to Watford’s Roberto Pereyra.
It was nothing like as controversial as some of his Burnley games and that includes the last occasion he refereed us against Everton. He yellow carded Ashley Barnes twice during the first half in the game at Goodison in 2015 which brought our first red card of the season but somehow, incredibly, allowed Kevin Mirallas to stay on the field after a shocking foul on George Boyd, similar to another foul on Boyd in the game at Spurs earlier in the season when he only yellow carded Ben Davies.
The Watford game was his fifth game of the season and he’s only refereed one game since, that between Stoke and Sunderland last Saturday. In those six games he’s handed out 22 yellow cards and two red cards with ten of them going to home team players and twelve to away team players.
There were just two yellow cards in the game at Stoke last week; Marko Arnautovic of Stoke and Sunderland’s Billy Jones.
I wrote last time that it is anyone’s guess what you might from him, but given the decisions from Craig Pawson and Mike Dean in the two games since, things surely can’t get any worse.
The assistant referees are Adrian Holmes (West Yorkshire) and D Bryan (Lincolnshire). The fourth official is Anthony Taylor (Wythenshawe) who refereed our game at Leicester in September.
