Last minute goal gives Millwall the points
A goal in the final minute of normal time gave Millwall’s under-23 team a 2-1 win at Turf Moor this afternoon, inflicting a first home defeat of the season for the Clarets.
With Michael Duff Cheltenham bound, he had a watching brief this afternoon in the stand and with Andy Farrell still unavailable it was Jon Pepper who took charge of the team although under-18coach Danny Cadamarteri was also in the dug out.
They saw Millwall take an early lead, Burnley come back and look the more likely in the first half before a somewhat stale affair after the break with Millwall winning it just seconds before the board went up for added time.
Millwall were in front in just the third minute when Lewis White fired a shot into the roof of the net but that did nothing other than spur us on and we were soon in the ascendancy. Millwall keeper Ryan Sandford made a couple of good saves while Anthony Glennon’s powerful shot looked set to go in before a fortunate block kept it out.
Finally we got our goal. Dan Agyei saw his header saved by Sandford who could do nothing to prevent Tinashe Chakwana from heading the rebound into the net.
Burnley were level and for much of the remainder of the first half we were very much the better team and probably should have gone in with an advantage.
Things changed, however, in what was a disappointing second half. We had our opportunities but were never again quite able to get the same sort of grip on the game. I did think we’d scored on one occasion, and maybe goal line technology could have worked to our advantage, but generally it was tepid stuff and the game looked to be petering out into a 1-1 draw.
That all changed in the 90th minute when we failed to clear our lines more than once and eventually Millwall substitute George Alexander netted to give the visitors all three points.
Just after the goal was scored the board went up for three extra minutes, but, other than being forced into a third substitution, we didn’t come up with a chance to get anything from the game.
