Leaders restore two point advantage in youth league
It’s as you were from two weeks ago in the northern group of the U18 Professional Development League with Sheffield Wednesday again going two points clear at the top of the table ahead of Nottingham Forest and Burnley.
The three of us were level on points last week but while we travelled to Forest on Saturday, earning a point from a 1-1 draw, Wednesday, who had been held to a draw a week earlier, won 2-0 at Hull and restored that two point advantage.
Just below us there was a shock for Leeds. They went into their game at home against Barnsley just three points below us and with a game in hand but fell to a surprise 2-0 defeat at home against Barnsley which enabled the Tykes to lift themselves from next to bottom in the table, ahead of both Birmingham and Bolton who suffered defeats against Sheffield United and Crewe respectively.
Hull are the team drifting currently. Their defeat has left them with just two points from their opening two games; that’s something we need to be aware of this Saturday when we play them. We don’t want to spoil our good start to the season with a disappointing home result.
There were only two games played in the south group, involving top of the league Ipswich and the bottom three. Both ended in draws. The Watford v Coventry result was perhaps not a surprise but Ipswich, who were looking to go three points clear, drawing at Colchester was a big surprise. It ended 3-3 to give Colchester, who, like Hull, are still looking for a first win, a third point of the season.
We are back to a full fixture list this week with the pick of the games in the north the one between Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds.
The player featured this week is first year scholar, forward Mitch George.
