I can't see any relevance of that to the current situation. The EU referendum was an entirely domestic internal matter, over which our MPs could not agree. A couple of weeks ago, a deal with Japan was out of the question.
Now the deal with Japan that was out of the question is not as good as the deal that the EU have negotiated with them.
