Re: Scrap VAR
The thing that worries me about VAR is that you potentially now have referees reluctant to make difficult calls in the belief that VAR will re-ref the incident by way of some sort of safety net. However you’ve then also got VAR supposedly applying a “clear and obvious” criteria in an inconsistent m...

Re: Burnley FC books recommendations
Just finished reading "The best ground in the fourth division" by Andrew Proctor. I first read it in the mid nineties when I was in my teens and while it's not about a happy period in our history I found it fascinating. Having just reread it, while it is still a melancholic read, our upturn since m...

1914 Cup Final goalkeeper Ronnie Sewell was signed from Gainsborough Trinity after defeating them 4-1 in the cup the previous year!

Could be Tony Norman - he'd certainly been the sub keeper in previous rounds

Can't say I remember too much about McCalliog - setting up the winner in the 1976 cup final probably his most famous moment and played for a good Scotland side in the late 60s - nowhere near as good as Willie Morgan!

I was wondering that, too - a quick check on Willie Morgan's Twitter account shows that it's Jim McCalliog, ex-Wednesday, Wolves, United, Soton and Scotland midfielderPetersa wrote:OK let me be the one to ask....one is Willie Morgan but who is the other

Re: Burnley players in World Cup Final Tournaments
I remembered this rather sad photo of the six players left out of the 28 man squad for Mexico in 1970 - Ralph alongside Shilton, Kidd, Sadler, McNab and Peter Thompson (who was also left out at a similar stage in 1962 and 1966!)

xg - expected goals. If points were allocated by expected (rather than good old fashioned actual) goals, we would be bottom of the Premier League

Well except for April 1983.
And April 1977 through the Ginger Pele - though neither "in the top flight" which is what the article should have said!

Re: Images that make you feel proud...
I think that the 60s photo may be from an under 21 tournament in Germany in 1966 - in the group stage, Burnley beat Fortuna Dusseldorf, Cologne and Inter Milan to qualify for the final where we beat Barcelona 2-1 with goals from Gary France and Ralph Coates. We then played a German Select Youth XI w...
