Am just reading a new book Connie by Harry Pearson on Learie Constantine. The 1st great West Indian to grace the Lancashire League at Nelson in the early 1930s. A trail blazer, reputed to be the highest paid sportsman in England at that time and Lancs League cricket paid better than the County game....

Excellent article, Connelly was one of my favourites. He scored the first Burnley goal I ever saw ( v West Ham 1959), a real goal scoring winger. The north east was a drinker's disaster area - S and N's Scotch and Exhibition, Vaux, Fed Special etc. Little competition to stir up complacency but thankfully now much improved with many excellent, exciting real ales on Tyneside. From desert to oasis in 20 years!

Schools are generally much bigger than pubs with more potential sources of infection. It is too early to open both given the UK's failure to get the disease under control. Pupils, Teachers and Parents all require protection at this stage.

My Dad did 29 yrs in the army, Signals Corps then Education. Shipped out of Singapore with my mum and elder brother before the Japs came down the Malaya Peninsula. Demobbed in 45 shortly after I was born.
