Re: Favourite Proper Lancashire Sayings!!

"Burnley born and Burnley bred, Strong in th'arm and wik in th'ead" When I was younger, I always thought it was weak in th'ead - not very complementary - but who's perfect? But after a little thought - a glimmer. As an eight-year-old we used to call the tiddlers we caught near Heasanford as being wi...

Re: I Could Have Been Somebody

I just want to thank everyone for their kind, informative and complimentary remarks. Some have asked if I have any more memories of the War years - I have a few. After some research the game I talked about was on January 24th - that being the day Warship Week began throughout Britain. I remember tha...

I Could Have Been Somebody

I could have been somebody - a member of a special elite - a Burnley football player. One can only dream of lost opportunities. It was a cold, bleak and austere winter day in January 1942. I was nine years old and had scraped a few pennies together to go on t'Turf.. I was bundled up in my Balaclava,...

Re: First Supermarkets in Burnley

An interesting question. I seem to remember, way back when both the world and I was a little younger, 'bout 1951 or '52 that a son of the Altham family returned from a visit to the 'States sure that he'd seen the future of grocery shops - the supermarket. The family opened a self-service grocery sho...

Re: Man in the white suit .. Film Locations

Here's a Burnley clip from the film.

The shot is taken at the intersection of Piccadilly Rd and Albion St. looking down Albion St towards Trafalgar St.

I was a newspaper boy and used to deliver papers around this area.

Happy Days!

Re: Cece"s Ice Cream

Before the war it seemed that the best ice cream - at least around Burnley - was made by italians. We had Cece's, Tognorella's and in Blackpool Pablo's. Was Pablo's italian(?) from the name it could be spanish. Around 1936 or 1937 we lived on Guildford St and I remember vividly running up to Lisbon ...

Re: Matthews playing at the Turf

I remember watching Blackpool play on 'Turf around 1951. I was in the Enclosure and had a close-up view of Mathews doing his jiggery pokery on the right wing - astonishing and enjoyable, but I don't recall any end product. Stan Mortensen also springs to mind as playing for Blackpool in that game. Th...

Re: Paul Robeson.

I also worshiped Paul Robeson - still do. A great, decent and honourable man who fought for the common man and against oppression of humanity. What hasn't been mentioned is his film career. I first saw him on-screen in "The Proud Land" (1940). The story of David Goliath, a Black American, who arrive...
