Re: On this day

Bad enough watching Burnley lose an FA Cup Semi-Final but think how annoyed you'd be if you'd walked it to Sheffield like this chap did.

Disappointed that he didn't walk to Swindon for the QF but respect his reasons for not doing so!

Burnley Express had someone doing a cartoon strip of matches at the time which was far more entertaining then the match write up. This was his effort for the Huddersfield game. Rossendale United would have been more successful with a ground somewhere in or near Rawtenstall town centre. I do concede I’m typing this with over a hundred years of hindsight as it was a decision made in 1898 and it probably made financial sense at the time to take over an existing ground. I’m fr...

Rossendale United’s main problem IMO was the location of their ground. No idea why someone at some point thought being tucked away in Newchurch was a good idea. There is currently a Rossendale FC (formerly Rossendale Amateurs) playing at Marl Pits in West Lancashire League. Would need quite a bit of...

The coffin thing is probably when they were relegated in 2017. Whenever Rovers or North End are relegated there’s a coffin in club colours buried in the cellar of a club in Bamber Bridge. Been a tradition since 1948.

Yes the 0-0 that meant England qualified.

I'd have Mark Ford & Steve Blatherwick in this team. I thought they were really good signings for the level we were at when Waddle brought them in. Great pics. The Crystal Palace game was my first Burnley match. Think that's Marshall Burke number 4.

Presume that's a token effort at segregation on the Longside in the Rovers photo? They must have widened the gap by the next season as I don't remember home and away fans being that close.

Yes, you're right. Arfield's penalty at Palace was close to the end. Not sure who else was on the pitch who would also have been in the frame for taking one. Ings perhaps?
Ings had pulled his hamstring & gone off injured.

The WBA one was at the Hawthorns & it hit keeper in his face and bounced wide. West Brom were doing ground up & we were in a tiny section in corner of ground.

A Coventry player was sent off for dissent in the Gifton penalty game but it wasn't Craig Hignett.

Hignett was sent off in 2002/3 season & remains the only player I've seen sent off for making a five knuckle shuffle gesture at a linesman.
